I think the comments about Ubuntu on this page are confusing. I'm not sure if Caroline settled on using Fedora, but in any case I think we should limit ourself to one distribution for soas or make it very clear which distribution we are talking about. For one, if people flash different distributions and report bugs to the soas component, we will have an hard time to figure out what they are talking about. --marcopg

interested in a laptop or motherboard that has the marvel chipset, and

What is the recommended process for updating non-OLPC systems, such as Sugar on Ubuntu? Presumably, [[DevelopmentTeam/Jhbuild]]?
:Right now, jhbuild is the only option although perhaps it would be easier to take the source tarballs released by the Sugar team and install them without requiring packaging. For Ubuntu, I would like to see a [https://help.launchpad.net/PPAQuickStart PPA] available that gets updated with development releases of Sucrose, but I haven't yet had time to look into that myself. --[[User:Morgs|Morgs]] 09:12, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

==LiveCD==
We have a number of LiveCD and LiveUSB efforts underway, although none of them are of production quality yet. The goal of these efforts is to make it easy for teachers to try Sugar in situations where the school computers are locked down or cannot be reimaged. Another use case is for children to use Sugar at school and at home using a LiveUSB in cases where 1-to-1 solutions are not available.

Caroline Meeks and I went to a computer lab at a Boston Public School to see what constraints we might encounter. They had a room full of Compaq Pentium 4 "EVO" desktops with 256M of DRAM. We tried a variety of LiveCDs (with and without Sugar).

Other issues included the setting and saving of parameters, e.g., TinyLinux saves network settings, which would not work well when switching from school to home.

It also may make sense to put a swap partition on the USB to help with some of the issues regarding OOM. (Yes, it will wear out, but not so quickly as one would think (Mitch Bradley had some interesting analyses of this which I will try to dig up.) But the bottom line is we need to keep the footprint small.

I know this is just the beginning, but I think a lot of other people might be as curious as I to know what is happening here on a more regular basis. I also know that most people are used to using email mailing lists for this sort of thing. However, since I maintain a general disdain for email, I thought it might not be too audacious to suggest a News page for the wiki here.

It would be nice to know more about where things are going and follow discussions in HTML. It might also be nice to have regular updates on what Walter and other luminaries are thinking about the direction of this whole thing. I am quite excited about the direction this is taking (although it scared me quite a bit until this site appeared), but the general lack of information makes one uncomfortable. Thus, I am making this request.

Although the templates for translations have been copied over from laptop.org, they do not work correctly, since they depend on the [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/ParserFunctions MediaWiki extension '''ParserFunctions'''], which is apparently not installed/enabled for the SugarLabs wiki. The symptom of this is stuff with <nowiki>{{#if:</nowiki> in the displayed text (e.g. in the translation box on this main welcome page. This needs to be enabled by an administrator, and may even require installing software on the server.
