In relation to Sugar, Ubuntu is a downstream distribution project that can be used to run Sugar.
Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic
Sugar 0.110 or 0.112 will be in Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic.
Ubuntu 17.10 Artful
Sugar 0.110 is in the archive for Ubuntu 17.10 Artful, and can be installed by typing
sudo apt install sucrose gir1.2-webkit-3.0
- log out,
- log in with the Sugar desktop selected.
Installing the package gir1.2-webkit-3.0 is a workaround for Debian bug #877812.
Ubuntu 17.04 Zesty
Sugar 0.110 is in the archive for Ubuntu 17.04 Zesty, and can be installed by typing
sudo apt install sucrose
- log out,
- log in with the Sugar desktop selected.
Using Sugar inside another desktop environment
Sugar is a desktop environment. For developers who use Ubuntu Unity, Gnome or another desktop environment, Sugar can be run inside that environment as a window.
Install the Remote Desktop packages:
sudo apt install xrdp rdesktop
Create a user for Sugar and set a default desktop environment:
sudo adduser sugar sudo su - sugar -c 'echo sugar >> .xsession'
Start a session:
rdesktop -g 1200x900 -u sugar -p sugar 0
Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial LTS
Sugar 0.106 is in the archive for Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial, and can be installed by typing
sudo apt install sucrose
Sugar 0.110 can be installed by careful addition of the Ubuntu 17.04 Zesty packages.
Organisations that require Ubuntu 16.04 support for Sugar may consider getting involved in the Ubuntu Stable Release Updates process.
OLPC Ubuntu Sugar 16.04 Xenial LTS
One Laptop per Child has been curating Sugar 0.110 and Activities on the Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial operating system. This build has entered production, and can be acquired through private negotiation or by ordering laptops from OLPC.
OLPC Ubuntu Sugar 14.04 Trusty LTS
One Laptop per Child was curating Sugar and Activities on the Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty operating system, but support for this version has since ended.
Installing a system
How to install Ubuntu with Sugar 0.106:
- you must already be familiar with how to install Ubuntu, if not, see Download Ubuntu Desktop, and Install Ubuntu Desktop,
- download our installer image (1.2 GB) md5, package list
- boot our image and install in the usual way,
- log out of the Unity desktop, and then log in with the Sugar desktop selected.
Adding to a system
Note: only available for 64-bit systems, check that uname -i shows x86_64.
How to add Sugar 0.107 to an Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty system:
- edit /etc/apt/sources.list to add the OLPC archive,
deb [trusted=yes arch=amd64] http://dev.laptop.org/pub/us trusty main
- update the package lists, and install Sugar,
sudo apt update && sudo apt install olpc-ubuntu-sugar
- log out of the Unity desktop, and then log in with the Sugar desktop selected.
Upgrading a system
How to upgrade to Sugar 0.107 on an existing Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty system with an earlier version of Sugar already installed:
- update the package lists, and apply all pending updates,
sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade
- log out, and then log in with the Sugar desktop selected.
