I think the two use cases (Resume vs Start a new) are either valuable for the home view thats supposed to be the main "workplace" of sugar interactions, so I suggest to try hard to design an option to have the two use cases directly graphically available on the screen real estate, one point could be that on average not so many different activity could be displayed in the favorites circle, allowing few options to show them in a "StartNew" or "Resume" graphic option:
Uncolored icons outside circle, the "resuming" colored icons inside in an incomplete circle, and Journal icon in centre (down to XO) as to represent even better the idea of reflection and research.
note: the inner circle "resuming "icons should be reasonably smaller that the outer ones becouse they do not need support the usecase to be easily identifiable.

Detailed Description
In order to support deployements activities the standard SOAS image should allow a limited degree of customization for basic/advanced settings.

This page would be the start of a documentation effort aimed to document those basic interfaces:

Benefit to Sugar
* to ease the personalization efforts from field organizations
* to avoid regression issues related to personalization done in the wrong places
* to ease peacefully coexistance between personalization needs and bugfixing/support activities

Scope
Actually will be mostly a documentation effort - no impact on code in this phase.

How To Test
User Experience
In case of a deploy in a school we could not expect children or teacher to spend a large initial amount of time to set up basic paramenters for SOAS usage (es. LANGUAGE, Timezone, Keyboard, servers, etc).

Whatever approach would be taken in order to land those initial settings in the actual sticks/images, the very first step is to try to define with increasing detail:
* what all those settings are
* where a deployer or developer could find them
* how to operate changes to those setting without creating regression errors in the procedure

Dependencies
* None on code

* Once consensus being reached on the customization documentation, developers that changes Sugar in areas that impact this documentation set should fell obliged to update it consistently and notify downstream.

Contingency Plan
If we don't complete this feature, it can be left out. Nothing else depends upon it.
In order to support deployements activities the standard SOAS image should allow a limited degree of personalization for basic settings.

Scope
SOAS Deployement Settings Definition

Owner
* Name: Carlo Falciola
* Email: <cfalciola dot yahoo dot it>
* Last updated: (2009 Nov 24)

Detailed Description
In order to support deployements activities the standard SOAS image should allow a limited degree of personalization for basic settings.

None

Contingency Plan
If we don't complete this feature, it can be left out. Nothing else depends upon it.
Several requests have been made to be able to set the language and keyboard during the intro dialog. (Deemed especially important for SoaS.)
Benefit to Sugar
Our users speak many languages and with Sugar on a Stick, deploy on many different--unpredictable?--keyboards. The change would be restricted to sugar/src/jarabe/intro/window.py. The logic used in the control panel would be replicated here.
Whatever approach would be taken in order to land those initial dsettings in the sticks/images, the very first step is to try ti define with increasing precision what all those settings are, where a deployer or developer could find them and how to operate changes without creating regression errors in the procedure.
Event Details
The FreeSoftwareWeek 2009 will be held from the 7th to 13th November 2009 in Bolzano, Italy. As part of free software week the TIS will host a Sugarcamp. A GNOME Hackfest will happen during that week as well. The camp fits quite well in our release cycle (0.88 planning/hacking) and having the GNOME Hackfest next door will hopefully create nice synergies. The FreeSoftwareWeek will end with the SFScon2009 the annual Free Software conference in South Tyrol.
Developers
Previous Next

By this point, you should have a working Sugar environment (or a substitute for it), a project idea, and an idea how and where to ask for help if you have problems. The next step is to actually start coding.

Tutorials
PyGTK developers will find a collection of Tutorials available, from very simple Hello World projects to an in-depth description of the development of Block Party.

Pygame developers will likely want to start with:

* Game Development Newbies -- general introduction
* Game development HOWTO -- 5-minutes to your first activity in Pygame

EToys/Smalltalk developers will want to start with Smalltalk Development on XO.

Other developers will want to read about Sugarizing non-Python applications.

Reference
* API Reference -- pointers to the various libraries' reference documentation.

You can also run the pydoc script on an XO in order to have browseable pydoc documentation locally. To do this, open a Terminal activity and run:

pydoc -p 8080

then open a Web Browser activity and go to the url:

http://localhost:8080/

to view the documentation. This approach works best with Python-coded libraries which have spent some time on their docstrings (and generally requires that you know English, as most docstrings are written in English).

Resources
* The Developer's Category collects everything in the wiki that's been tagged as pertaining to developers (it's a bit hard to navigate)
* Sugar Code Snippets a few canonical code fragments that may be of use when coding in PyGTK

Beginner's tools
Please feel free to add other suggested resources to the ones already there and to add some
feedback, e.g., good for beginners/experts, etc.

FAQ
The Developer's FAQ is large enough to merit its own page in the Developer's manual.

Contributing
As with most Open Source software projects, we have difficulties with documentation. We are very interested in finding people interested in documenting the system. If you are too shy about your coding skills to write code, helping us document the code-base would be an amazing and valuable contribution.

Helping organize the wiki (the web site you are currently reading) to better document the platform and development process would also be very helpful.
