* Sugar CellRendererIcon has too much logic inside. It should only handle how to render itself.
In particular, a CellRenderer is not a Widget, then do not have event to know when the mouse interact,

* Sugar CellRendererIcon is connected to many signals. Just detaching them while scrolling provides a performance boost.

* There are a additional block in the Journal. That is not addressed by this feature, we guess there is a DBus blocking call,
but we could't confirm that.

* ScrollingDetector: A new class ScrollingDetector allow simplify slow operations while the treeview is scrolling.
To use it, just do:

* CellRendererIcon changes:

The CellRendererIcon is not a widget, then, do not receive events when the mouse
enter or leaves, and all the logic in the CellRendererInvoker is more complex than should be.
Worst, we had 6 different CellRendererIcons in the Journal, then we simplified (and solved issues) implementing a
TreeViewInvoker. The TreeView knows where is every cell then the code is much more simple.

The ObjectPalettes was created in the mouse enter callback, then if a user moved
the mouse cursor over the activity icons, many palettes were created, and that palette creation is expensive [http://bugs.sugarlabs.org/ticket/4343].
Moving the palette creation to the treeview, we can create the palette when the mouse was in a cell for a specified timeout and not before.

After run it in a Sugar terminal, the view jump to the Home, but in the frame you can see two journal icons.
The second is the profiled version. In the toolbar have a Stop button.
After stop, you can check the profile.txt file.

This feature provides a new way of interoperability between
activities, the current ones being the Journal and the Clipboard.

Activities are provided with a new API to call other activities. This
API allows the expression of phrases such as "read this book" or "edit
this code with that editor".

This is important for activities that handle sets of objects. For
example a gallery of images, a content catalog.

One of Sugar key principles is simplicity. Activities are meant to be
simple, and users can make interesting things happen when they
interoperate with them. Currently, they do so by using the Journal
and the Clipboard.

However, there are cases where you want to start an activity from
inside another, thus skipping the step through the Journal.

This feature provides a third way of interoperability between
activities.

For example, an activity whose purpose is to download content, would
like to display the content right away.

The following considerations are made.

* This solution is based on current activities, ie does not imply a change in activities. It uses the available information that Sugar has now:
** the bundle registry
** the activity declared mime types
** the metadata in datastore objects

* This solution is for every bundle, not just activities. This includes content bundles.

* This solution considers Rainbow security.

An activity can start other activity by:

* knowing the activity ID - starts that specific activity

* passing a datastore object - if the activity ID is also passed, starts the object with that specific activity. Otherwise starts the first activity that can handle the object.

* passing a mime type - if the activity ID is not passed, start the first activity that can handle the mime type.

An error is reported to the user of the API if the request couldn't be
accomplished, with a message. For example "no activity can start this
object" or "activity with ID XYZ not found".

=== Implementation ===

The code that starts activities in Sugar currently lives in the
Journal. The idea is to move the code to a more general module in
Sugar, and make the Journal a user of it. Then, add a DBUS service so
that the activitie's toolkit can use the API too.

== Benefit to Sugar ==

This will enhace the interoperability of Sugar activities, removing
the need to pass through the Journal in the cases where it makes sense
and feels indirect or complicated. Thus, is an enhacement of the user
experience.

The lack of this capability made Uruguay deployment (Ceibal) go for a
custom solution regarding content obtention and consumption. They
mixed the capabilities of activities GetBooks, Read and Jukebox into a
monolithic activity "Biblioteca Segura".

== Scope ==

This feature affects only Sugar modules. Current activities can take
advantage of the new API provided by this feature.

The Journal is adapted to be a user of this API. In fact, all the
code is adapted from the Journal code.

There is no UI in this feature. Activities that currently have a
button "Show in Journal" can move to this API and change the button
label to "Start" or "Display" or something more specific like "Read

In 2011 Martin Abente (tch) sent a patch that enhaced sugar-launch
http://marc.info/?l=olpc-sugar&m=129485435106175&w=2

As discussed in the mailing list, this solution is not appropiate
because it skips Rainbox security (http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Rainbow)
in secured systems, and seems odd that the child activity process is
spawned from the parent activity process. Sugar "the shell" should
spawn the activity processes.

=== Android Intents as reference ===

I loosely based this feature in Android Intents:

Android has a similar mechanism than the proposed here. Is much more
powerful and used system-wide and also internally per application.
Android apps are made of components, and those components declare
which actions can perform as intent filters. Using a data structure
called Intent, one component can call an action of another component.
That data stracture holds an abstract description of the action to be
performed. Android has an intent resolution mechanism to determine
the component that matches the intent.

The main similarities and differences are:

* Currently we can only have one action: "Start" that launches an activiy. Our activities are not made of components like Android apps. If that were the case, we could be able to do neat things like "take a photo" from any activity, that would call the correspondent component of Record or other available activity to take a photo from the camera. This is a major change that implies a change in activities, so is out of the scope of this feature.

* Android Intents use a URI for data, usually a content provider like "content://..". The current way to reference an object in Sugar is by its ID. Currently, we can't pass arbitrary data to an activity.

* In Android, the component to be called can be implied from the data. We do the same. Our components are the Sugar bundles.

* In Android, extra data can be passed. We can't do that in current activities.

* In Android, the mime type can be explicit or implied from the data. We do the same.

To create an easily accessible, highly usable platform that Sugar users can use to discuss, debate and share ideas about everything related to Sugar. It is a forum, activity and item in the current activity palette.

Sugar Labs provides a forum. Using the Sugar Labs forum requires creating a forum account, which is offered on first use.

Alternative forums can be provided by deployments. These forums must be designed for the purpose, and configured into the build of Sugar.

An alternative forum is configured by setting the ''social-help-server'' key in the ''org.sugarlabs.collaboration'' schema, for example by using a vendor override. == Benefit to Sugar ==
Walter says: People are social and learning is social. Having a forum for sharing ideas and help is invaluable -- especially in light of the decentralized nature of the Sugar community. While the developer community is comfortable with IRC, we have not been successful in getting our user community to use it: they are seeming more comfortable with web tools (e.g. there is a large community of teachers using Facebook to discuss Sugar.) It would of course be better to have a FOSS solution. But also one that didn't require a lot of maintenance and support by the Sugar developer community. Hence, a connection to an existing FOSS platform would be attractive.

Prasoon says: If this project is successfully completed, the users will have instant access to a discussion platform on which they can ask any question related to Sugar. Over time, this information will develop itself into a repository of information where most common questions related to the platform would be present. This repository of information will be hugely beneficial for the Sugar community.

Sai Vineet says: There is currently no way to get instant help from real people from inside Sugar, except the IRC activity, which sadly is too complicate and distributed(hard to find stuff which one needs, no logs, there are security problems). We really need a way to get children help quickly, and this is what this project will give us. It will, with time, also become a full help repository, and also a way for children to talk and discuss things in a more social manner than it is now. Thus the Social Help project is invaluable to Sugar and it's vision, that learning is a social process.

This HowTo explains how to update the data files in the wikipedia activities or how to create new activities with other languages or different selections of articles.

The procedure is not very difficult if you already have a Sugar environment setup. If you have doubts or the information provided is not adequate, please contact me at ''gonzalo at laptop dot org'' or in the sugar-devel mailing list and I will try to help and improve this page.

If you want to create a wikipedia activity in your language, and do not have the technical resources, but can help translating a few files and doing quality control, contact me and I will help you to create the activity.

=== How to Create a new wikipedia activity or update an existing activity ===

This page describes how to generate the data files needed to create a wikipedia activity like
[http://activities.sugarlabs.org/es-ES/sugar/addon/4401 Wikipedia es] or [http://activities.sugarlabs.org/es-ES/sugar/addon/4411 Wikipedia en].

The general idea is to download an XML dump-file (backup) containing the current Wikipedia pages for a given language, then process the dump and select certain pages and compress them into a self-contained Sugar activity. Whether or not to include the images from the wiki articles will have a large impact on the size of the activity.

Generating a Wikipedia activity requires a computer with a lot of available disk space, ideally lots of RAM and a working Sugar environment. It is probably best to use packages provided by your favorite Linux distribution or in a virtual machine. The wikipedia xml file is very large (almost 6 GB for the Spanish wikipedia, and it is even bigger in English), and you will need lots of space to generate temporary files. The process does take a lot of time, but it is mostly automated, although you will need to confirm success at each stage of the process before moving on to the next one.

== Download the wikipedia base activity ==

You will need to download the wikipedia base from http://dev.laptop.org/~gonzalo/wikiserver/WikipediaBase-35.xo. This package includes the activity and the tools to create the data files.

You need to unzip it in your Activities directory, or install it, if you do not have another wikipedia activity already installed.

== Download a Wikipedia dump file==

Wikipedia provides daily (or nearly daily) XML dump files for each language.

This test was done with the spanish dump. The file used was eswiki-20111112-pages-articles.xml.bz2 from http://dumps.wikimedia.org/eswiki/20110810/

You need to create a directory inside the previously created activity directory, and download the wikipedia dump file there.

The first two letters from your directory must be the language code, next a '_', and later any string. For example: es_es, en_us or en_history.

== Process the dump file ==

You need to edit the file tools2/config.py, and modify the variable input_xml_file_name.
If you are creating a wikipedia in a different language than spanish, modify the values of the other variables.

After saving the config.py, you can process the dump file:

../tools2/pages_parser.py

The process will generate files with the same prefix than the uncompressed xml file.
This first process will create the following files:

eswiki-20111112-pages-articles.xml.page_templates
eswiki-20111112-pages-articles.xml.redirects

If you want to have more information, you can use the option "--debug" to create the files prefix.all_pages, prefix.blacklisted and prefix.titles and help you
to research about the process.

With the spanish file and a bit more than 2.3M pages, this process takes aprox 1:30 hours in my system.

== Make a selection of pages ==

To create a selection of pages to be included in the wikipedia activity,
you need create two files: '''favorites.txt''' and '''blacklist.txt'''
The two files are a list of titles of pages.

The criteria used to select the pages is: all the pages in '''favorites.txt'''
will be included and all the pages linked from this pages too, except the pages
in the file '''blacklist.txt'''.

Our wikipedia activity has a static index page (static/index_lang.html) and you can create your own index page.
I have created my '''favorites.txt''' with all the pages linked from the index page (in the case of spanish 130 pages) and 300 pages more selected from
a statistic of most searched pages in wikipedia (http://stats.grok.se)

There is not a linear relation between the number of favorite pages and the final
number of pages selected, but as reference, you can use this numbers:

The files favorites.txt and blacklist.txt should be in the same directory
than the .xml file

To create the selection do:

../tools2/make_selection.py

After you have created the selection, you can look at the list of pages in the file
pages_selected-level-1 and modify your favorites.txt and/or blacklist.txt
files and rerun the process if you want to modify the selection.

=== The case of wikipedias with few articles ===

If the wikipedia in the selected language have less than 40000 articles, is possible include all the articles in the activity, then is not needed create the favorites.txt file. You can do the selection of all the articles doing:

This process is faster and when finished you can do a basic test:

../tools2/test_index.py page_title

and this will show you the content in wiki format of the selected page.
At this stage, the process will be slow, because it needs to search for every template

This page describes how to generate the data files needed to create a wikipedia activity like

The general idea is to download an XML dump-file (backup) containing the current Wikipedia pages for a given language, then process the dump and select certain pages and compress them into a self-contained Sugar activity. Whether or not to include the images from the wiki articles will have a large impact on the size of the activity.

Generating a Wikipedia activity requires a computer with a lot of available disk space, ideally lots of RAM and a working Sugar environment. It is probably best to use packages provided by your favorite Linux distribution or in a virtual machine. The wikipedia xml file is very large (almost 6 GB for the Spanish wikipedia, and it is even bigger in English), and you will need lots of space to generate temporary files. The process does take a lot of time, but it is mostly automated, although you will need to confirm success at each stage of the process before moving on to the next one.

== Download the wikipedia base activity ==

You will need to download the wikipedia base from http://dev.laptop.org/~gonzalo/wikiserver/WikipediaBase-35.xo. This package includes the activity and the tools to create the data files.

You need to unzip it in your Activities directory, or install it, if you do not have another wikipedia activity already installed.

== Download a Wikipedia dump file==

Wikipedia provides daily (or nearly daily) XML dump files for each language.

This test was done with the spanish dump. The file used was eswiki-20111112-pages-articles.xml.bz2 from http://dumps.wikimedia.org/eswiki/20110810/

You need to create a directory inside the previously created activity directory, and download the wikipedia dump file there.

The first two letters from your directory must be the language code, next a '_', and later any string. For example: es_es, en_us or en_history.

You need to edit the file tools2/config.py, and modify the variable input_xml_file_name.
If you are creating a wikipedia in a different language than spanish, modify the values of the other variables.

The process will generate files with the same prefix than the uncompressed xml file.
This first process will create the following files:

Our wikipedia activity has a static index page (static/index_lang.html) and you can create your own index page.
I have created my '''favorites.txt''' with all the pages linked from the index page (in the case of spanish 130 pages) and 300 pages more selected from
a statistic of most searched pages in wikipedia (http://stats.grok.se)

There is not a linear relation between the number of favorite pages and the final
number of pages selected, but as reference, you can use this numbers:

The files favorites.txt and blacklist.txt should be in the same directory
than the .xml file

To create the selection do:

../tools2/make_selection.py

After you have created the selection, you can look at the list of pages in the file
pages_selected-level-1 and modify your favorites.txt and/or blacklist.txt
files and rerun the process if you want to modify the selection.

Words is a offline dictionary activity.

Use dictionaries in dictd format. Is possible add more languages without need modify the activity.

The dictionaries were downloaded from (1). I have selected a few, but more can added without need modify the activity.

The options in the toolbar buttons are updated based on the available dictionaries.

I also added the GCIDE English dictionary (2) When available, a definition of the english word will be displayed.

This is the time when it's possible for a solar eclipse to occur, but due to the small visible size of both the Sun and the Moon disks, it happens very rarely. This is also the time when it's possible for a luna eclipse to occur (the Moon hidden by the Earth's shadow). = Development =

Moon is a fully Python activity that uses PyGTK for graphics and events. All Python code is in an easily modifiable single file with a Sugar activity subclass that takes care of control, views, and a model class for actual Moon calculations. The code was ported from a Cocoa application I wrote some time ago for the Mac, called [http://osx.garycmartin.com MoonDock].

Is a modified version of Speak.Activity that embeds PyAIML and a chatterbot. It currently supports English and Spanish but its simple to add new languages.

With the objective to get more information about deployments to help us evaluate alternatives for future developments at SugarLabs, the SLOBs ran a survey at the beginning of 2015.

The questions were sent by email, and we received 15 replies, with information about 21 deployments (some respondents are involved in more than one deployment). The first conclusion is that we need to improve our communication with the deployments, but the results are representative enough. In particular, we couldn’t communicate with some of the biggest deployments.

The questions we sent were:

* Describe the actual population using Sugar in your deployment (number of people, public/private schools, ages, etc.)
* Projections for the next year(s): number of schools (teachers & students), platform (hw&sw)
* What type of communication do you have with SugarLabs?
* What is the level of satisfaction with the use of Sugar and activities in your deployment.
* What are the main issues you find in the use of Sugar and Activities in your deployment.
* Are other options of hardware/software in use in your deployment right now?
* What are your plans to the future one/two years, with respect to the use of Sugar?
* Would you pay for support or services? What type of work would be needed by you?

The game memorize is about finding matching pairs. A pair can consist of any multimedia object. At the moment these are images, sounds and text but this could be extended to animations or movie snippets as well. Which pairs do match is up to the creator of the game. Memorize is actually more than just a predefined game you can play, it allows you to create new games yourself as well.

== Introduction ==
Jukebox is a simple media player. One can play audio files or video files according to different codecs installed. It supports different playlist files like .m3u , .pls . It also supports playing of http streams over network.

== What is new for users ==
Two major playlist file support added, if there are more than one song in the list then users can use previous/next buttons to go to different songs.

Sugar have a global text to speech feature, you can select any text and do TTS with the device in the frame or with a keystroke.
