About me
See my wikipedia page, and my OLPC wikipage.

I'm a student and developer based out of Washington, DC. I've been working with Sugar for 2 years, and Linux in general for 6+ years. Prior to joining Sugar Labs, I worked with OLPC in the Support Gang to handle "donor relations", essentially replying to support tickets as well as gathering user feedback about the OLPC and Sugar experience.

Things I do at Sugar Labs
I help maintain a number of Sugar Labs web services along with Bernie Innocenti such as Gitorious, Infrastructure Team/Resources#Sunjammer, and Google Apps. I am also an administrator and bureaucrat at the Sugar Labs Wiki. I have founder access to the <tt>#sugar</tt> and <tt>#sugar-meeting</tt> channels, so if you need assistance with any of those services feel free to ask me.

I try to help out where I can with software development and design. I'm currently working on improving the user experience for the installation and deployment of Sugar on a Stick for both educators and students.

Contact
The fastest way to reach me is via IRC or XMPP. If your query is not urgent, email is preferred. Please see my contact page for more information, including addresses.

If you have a question about something on-wiki, feel free to leave me a note on my talk page.

Sugar Labs Membership
The Sugar Labs members list consists of all the contributors to the Sugar project. Members can run for election to the Oversight Board, vote in the elections for the Oversight Board, and suggest referenda.

Any "significant and sustained" contributor to Sugar Labs is eligible for membership. Although it is difficult to specify a precise definition, a contributor generally must have contributed to a non-trivial improvement of the Sugar project or Sugar Labs activity. Contributions may be code, documentation, translations, maintenance of project-wide resources, running a Sugar deployment, or other non-trivial activities which benefit Sugar Labs. Membership eligibility is an individual determination: while contributions made in the course of employment will be considered, they will generally be ascribed to the individuals involved, rather than accruing to all employees of a "contributing" corporation. The Membership and Elections Committee (MEC / MembCom) will oversee membership applications (Please apply by sending email to members at sugarlabs.org).

The Membership and Elections Committee will review the membership list for currency once per year. Any member may join this committee, which is currently staffed by Sebastian Dziallas and Luke Faraone.

Applying for membership
All submissions MUST be sent via email to members at sugarlabs.org. Submissions sent to other email addresses or sent after the deadline will not be processed for this year's election. Someone on the MEC will reply to your query within 2 business days. If you don't get a reply after a week, please contact Luke Faraone.

In your email, please include:
* Your name
* Your IRC / Wiki / Gitorious username
* A description of your contribution to Sugar Labs, links are preferable.

Currency assurance policy
In order to ensure that the Sugar Labs Membership list is reflective of the current status of the project and its participants, once a year members will be asked to confirm that they still wish to be a Sugar Labs Member. If this request bounces, or if a request has not been replied to after it has been a) resent, b) checked for a more current email address, and c) six months have passed, the member will be sent a removal notice with an invitation to reapply.

Timeline for 2013-2014 Season
To change your password, you can visit https://ldap.sugarlabs.org/passwd .
To reset your password, send a GPG-signed request to the sysadmin contact.

To conserve resources, shell accounts will be removed from the system after
6 months of inactivity.

Local email management
Instead of forwarding email to another account, you could use IMAP or our webmail.
See Service/imap and Service/smtp.

Public web hosting
You can use PHP in your web pages. It will execute with your credentials.

Do not distribute non-free software from your account, as this is not allowed by the terms of service of our host, the Free Software Foundation.

Public git hosting
You can publish your personal git repositories on http://people.sugarlabs.org/gitweb .
The repositories will also be accessible via the git protocol as
git://people.sugarlabs.org/USERNAME/REPONAME.git

* Copy or symlink your repository to <code>~/public_git</code>.
* Ensure that the path to your repository is publicly readable.
* Touch the file <code>git-daemon-export-ok</code> in the repository.

<!--There are three ways to do this:-->

* Use Fedora Live USB Creator
*# Download the ISO image from here.
*# Download the Live USB Creator from FedoraHosted here.
*# Insert a USB flash drive (or SD Card) with more than 2 GB of free space into your computer. (See image and Cautions with using Live USB devices regarding flash drive size and usage.)
*# Launch Live USB Creator.
*# Select the 'Browse' button to 'Use existing Live CD' and find the downloaded .iso file image on your system.
*# Adjust the Persistent Storage slider. This enables you to save changes to the system and additional Sugar Activities onto the device.
*# Select your flash drive as the target, and click the Create Live USB button.
*# Wait for the process to finish, then close the Live USB Creator program.
*# Stop your flash drive with the Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media notification area icon dialog, and eject it.
<!--
* 2. Burn a CD-ROM disc, then run livecd-iso-to-disk
*# Use Windows 7 built-in Disk Image Burner or a free utility, like ImgBurn, to write the downloaded .iso file onto a blank CD.
*# Insert a USB flash drive (or SD Card) with 1 GB or more of free space into your computer. (See image and Cautions with using Live USB devices regarding flash drive size and usage.)
*# Boot your computer with the CD-ROM disc. You probably need to press F1, F10, F12, Esc, or a similar key as the computer starts up in order to set the boot source for your computer to the CD-ROM device.
*# A successful boot will take you into Sugar on a Stick Mirabelle. From there, open the Terminal Activity, , from the Home view.<br>
*# Click the 'Become root' icon, , to gain administrative permissions in the Terminal session.
*# Change the working directory to /LiveOS/<br>cd /LiveOS/
*# Be certain of your USB/SD scsi drive node name (such as sda, sdb, etc.) and partition (such as 1, 2, etc.), yielding, for example, /dev/sdb1.
*# execute the Linux command line:<br>
*# Reboot from the newly-installed Live USB with Mirabelle.

* 3. Launch a virtual machine, then run livecd-iso-to-disk
*# Download and install VirtualBox (for example; you could do something similar with another vm).
*# Create a new virtual machine, choose a name, such as Mirabelle.
*# Choose Linux for the Operating System and Version Fedora (64 bit) if available, or Fedora, on systems lacking 64-bit functionality.
*# Choose Base Memory Size: 256 MB to match an XO-1, 512 or 1024 MB to match an XO-1.5.
*# Insert a USB storage device into your physical computer and enable the VirtualBox USB controller. Then add a filter to recognize the inserted device in the USB section of the VirtualBox machine setup.
*# Start the new virtual machine.
Sugar Labs is currently facilitating a rich and diverse free software ecosystem, one which has the potential to revolutionize education for millions of children worldwide. In order to achieve this end-result, Sugar Labs needs to continue to engage new educators, content creators, and developers, as well as strengthen existing relationships with current contributors.

Plans for 2010 - 2011
* Establish open communication with a variety of downstream Linux distributions, so people running any recent version of one can quickly deploy Sugar in their environment
* Focus on improving the reliability of Sugar on a Stick, as well as simplifying its installation
* Off-load infrastructure to relevant third parties (FSF, MIT Media Labs) to ease maintenance and reduce potential downtime
* Streamline the Sugar Labs web site so that people can get to the information they need (getting involved, getting sugar, etc) faster and more easily

Personal involvement
Over the past year, in addition to working on improving the end-user experience with Sugar on a Stick, I have been investigating new ways to lower the barrier to entry in Sugar development and content contribution. By leveraging low hanging fruit, one-hour projects, and quick to reward tasks, Sugar Labs can attract and keep a wider variety of contributors.

Through tools such as Canonical's Launchpad, GetSatisfaction, and other sites, Sugar can continue to expand its developer base. Granted, any new infrastructure or separation in procedures can create additional confusion on the user's part. Because of this, we need to consider carefully our choices so as to not have the opposite effect of what we are attempting to achieve.

<includeonly>===Sugar Labs Membership===</includeonly>

<!-- This is no longer relevant
: Acknowledgment: Sebastian and Luke are both running for Oversight Board positions in the upcoming election. David Farning, as an outgoing (not running for re-election) Oversight Board member and current MEC liaison, will audit and assure (along with the community) that the MEC work is transparent and fair. -->

Submissions sent to other email addresses or sent after the deadline will not be processed for this year's election. Someone on the MEC will reply to your query within 2 business days.

Timeline for 2010-2011 Season
* 2010-09-01: New Member addition frozen. All requests made after this date will be processed after the 2010 election.
* 2010-09-03: All existing 2009-2010 applications sent to members@sl.o processed
* 2010-10-01: Email sent out to all members containing details on the 2010 election, with a link to the provider selected by Sugar Labs.
Notes:
* If you do this often, you may want to download the Blueberry CD Image once. Then, when it comes to create the flash drive, hit the Browse button and select the downloaded file rather than selecting "Blueberry" from the menu as above.

For GNU/Linux Users
1-)Linux Users will use a slightly different approach than Windows Users to ensure maximum compatibility
with different distributions. Please follow the instructions carefully to ensure your data is preserved.

If you are a Fedora User, run the following command:

<code>yum install liveusb-creator</code>

Then download soas-2-blueberry.iso and select it by using the Browse button. You can check to make sure that the .iso downloaded properly by comparing the sha1sum to the one here:(sha1sum)

sha1sum soas-2-blueberry.iso
8022b68433295f12fbfffa66bf49205851a6a1e0

* Launch LiveUSB Creator and follow the instructions above.

2-)If you use any other distribution, download the image-writer tool from here and the live image from here.

This solution will not create a persistent storage overlay

* Open a terminal and become root, either by using su or sudo.
* Enter the following command: ./image-writer soas-2-blueberry.iso
* WARNING: If you proceed here, your flash drive will be wiped!
* The script will output a device name; confirm that it matches with your flash drive.
* You will be notified once the process has finished.
For Mac OS X Users
The procedure for Mac OS X users is similar to the one for Linux users. Verify that you have an Intel processor, and not a PowerPC (PPC) G3, G4, or G5 processor Apple Macintosh. Mac users should be aware that they may be able to prepare their flash drive on a Mac, but depending on the generation of the hardware used, they may need to use another computer to test whether the prepared flash drive works.

* You can check if the entire file was downloaded properly by opening the Terminal application and using the shasum command on the downloaded file: <!-- "md5" will work too, e.g. $ md5 /Downloads/soas-2-blueberry.iso -->
* Insert a flash drive. WARNING: your flash drive will be wiped in the next step!
* Execute the following command in Terminal: cd Downloads; python image-writer-mac soas-2-blueberry.iso
* Proceed as stated in the instructions for Linux Users.
Boot Helper
If your machine doesn't support booting from USB devices, then download the soas-2-boot.iso and burn it to a CD. ImgBurn is a free Windows application to do so, in case your current computer does not come with such a software.

* Use the Windows Explorer to name your USB flash drive FEDORA (from the Properties dialog for your device), as otherwise, it won't be recognized by the boot-helper CD.
* Put both the boot-helper CD and the USB flash drive in your computer and let it boot from the CD.

While we hope that Sugar on a Stick works flawlessly for you, if you do run into any problems, there are several forums for seeking help. As of 04 February 2010, bugs should be filed at http://bugs.sugarlabs.org under the SoaS component (announcement).

Sugar on a Stick (Blueberry) is based on Fedora 12 and consequently uses Fedora for device support, e.g., wireless support. There is additional help available for Fedora:

* http://fedorasolved.org/ is a "how to" website for Fedora
* http://fedoramobile.org/ is a great place to learn more about wireless support on Fedora

For general questions about Sugar, you may want to start with our user manual:
Mac users should be aware that they may be able to prepare their flash drive on a Mac, but depending on the generation of the hardware used, they may need to use another computer to test whether the prepared flash drive works.
