This page serves as a showcase for deign ideas and discussion around the Sugar UI. Each topic below contains a "slideshow" illustrating our latest ideas and outlining some of the decisions and tradeoffs that were made in coming to them. Please feel free to add to the discussion sections to provide useful feedback as we iterate on the designs and move them toward implementation.

For more detailed (and more technical) descriptions of some of the topics presented below, please visit the Specifications section of the wiki, which will drive the implementation of specific features.

Activity Management
This slideshow focuses on our new approaches to activity launching, switching, and management. Most importantly, it includes updated design ideas for the Home screen and a brand new Frame organization which enhances activity management, though has additional merits on its own as well.

Frame
This slideshow provides a deeper understanding of the reorganized Frame, describing its sections for people, places (and activities), clipboard, and devices. It also introduces the foundation of the notification system and explains its relationship to the Frame's layout and purpose as a persistent UI element.

Journal
This slideshow presents a brand new vision for the Journal, which is focused around two views: object and action. The object view will be reminiscent of the current Journal UI, presenting a list of objects stored on the system and providing access to detailed information and (now) their version histories. The action view, on the other hand, will serve as a friendly "journal-like" log of the child's interactions with the machine, referencing one or more objects but reading much like a scrapbook, and providing a friendly browsable interface into the content they have created.

Toolbars
This slideshow illustrates the latest thinking regarding toolbars and the nature of tabs within the interface.
18.85.18.134https://wiki.sugarlabs.org/index.php?title=Design_Team/Designs/Activity_Management&diff=19283Design Team/Designs/Activity Management2008-02-25T21:28:40Z
18.85.18.134: /* 04 */

The Home screen is a place from which to launch new or recently used activities. The child's favorite activities surround their XO, while their current activity is shown directly beneath it, consistent with the other zoom levels. Scaling of both the ring and the icons within it allow up to 40 activities to be shown.
An addition to the XO menu provides a quick and easy link directly to a library containing additional activities. The activities available depend on the child's level of connectivity: local, to a school server, or to the internet. A single click will download a new activity and place it within the ring.
A child may launch an activity simply by clicking its icon in the ring. The palette for an activity offers to start the activity privately, with a friend, or publicly (and later with a specific group). It also reveals the most recent instances of the selected activity, allowing the child to resume one directly from Home screen.
It presents the option to create a new instance of an activity, or resume a recent one. The child's running activities appear at the top edge of the Frame, adjacent to the zoom levels. Their position in the Frame makes them easy to access from anywhere, which also makes switching activities more natural. Additionally, the child may interact on them directly: for instance, they might drag a friend from the Neighborhood onto an activity icon to invite them.
