When working with used or donated computers it is highly recommended to first wipe the computer’s hard drive. This can be done using DBAN, a program that automatically deletes any pre-existing operation system. DBAN can be downloaded here: http://www.dban.org

DBAN is designed to boot from floppy or CD and completely wipe all hard drives attached to the machine.  It can either fill them with zeroes or do multiple passes to various government security standards.
