Summary of recommendations for The Journal
(November 2nd and 9th, 2011)
As part of the series of chats on the theme of evaluation, we discussed the ideas proposed by the SugarLabs team to improve the functionality of the Journal. The community made suggestions on each point:
# Record in the Journal at any time: Here the intent is to enable editing the description, tags or the title at any time easily from the activity, and not have to wait to close the activity. The community considers this is a very good functionality and makes the following recommendations to rescue the process of reflection and documentation of projects:
#* Create an icon that allows entering notes of the details of the object without having to go into the Journal (tags, description, and authors). The community suggested to follow a model similar to the one Scratch uses, with the argument that children find it easier to use.
#* Additionally, when you close the activity, we suggest the detail window displays the information that has already been entered in the Journal.
# Open activity-specific directories.
#* Open folders for a specific activity or project to load samples from the activity, as in Turtle Art.
#* Display object types from the Journal.
#** A further suggestion for displaying / arranging different types of objects (either activities or any other type of filter) is to create groups and add descriptions to the whole group.
#** Also include other ways to view/ display objects where it is possible to see the description, tags, etc. without having to go into detail of each individual entry.
# Additional filters that help teachers identify and understand the use that the child gives the XO (and Activities) while in school, or at home.
#* What types of filters are desirable and useful?
#** Home / School Filter: A first proposal was to create the filter School / Home, which would allow teachers to identify which objects (projects) are associated with school work. At the time of data analysis of the use of the XO, this type of filter authorizes which information from Journal to be made public.
#** Public / Private Filter: another approach is to use these filters to enable the child to identify which works are public, and create a mechanism for the protection of their privacy. Public works, if they are labeled this way, could be analyzed by the teacher, according to the creation and modification dates. It is also possible to analyze frequency of use of Activities and its metadata, including for projects marked as private. Both proposals would require the child to mark his/her work from the Activity, which could cause confusion. It is clear that the experts in the learning community are interested in a solution that allows analysis within and outside of school, and give children control over personal information they wish to keep private.
# Operations on multiple files in the Journal:
#* The community finds functional this option to allow the selection of multiple files to copy to a USB key.
#* A suggestion was made to make a backup of favorite projects and generate a zip file with those.
# Metadata specific to each Activity:
#* The idea is to record data related to the use of each Activity and display it in the detail view of the Journal.
#* We had previously discussed this point with the community, for this purpose we created a table to collect from them the data to analyze within each activity: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Datos_diario , this initial feedback is a collection of ideas that still need to be analyzed in order to select those that are feasible.
# Tags by default:
#* We believe we can improve the use of tags by allowing the user an option to select from a predefined group. The projects can add their local listings, and the children can also add their own tags. Here are some mockups: http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Journal_NewUI#Mockups. We still need define what the most suitable labels are in order to have a common point of comparison between countries: by subjects (science, literature, geometry, etc...) or by dimensions of work (search, read, create, etc.).
# Labels on the activities:
#* We can assign default tags to the Activities based on a category of activities. This would facilitate the automated process to analyze the categories of activities most commonly used.
#* At the same time this would facilitate the search filters for the Home view based on these categories.
# Audio Tags:
#* The community is not convinced on how adding audio tags will improve the use of tags to the Journal entries or how the analysis of this kind of data could be done at a large scale.
#* It was suggested to add this option of audio tags to Portfolio Activity.
#* A proposal to study a prototype within a specific project, to analyze the behavior of children with regard to this option was suggested.
# Achievements Activity and Badges:
#* An Activity dedicated to show levels of achievement within other Activities (for linear activities such as Maze) and provide badges earned by such achievements. It was suggested to use the term "attainments".
#* It was decided to think more deeply about the implications of this Activity, especially if intended as an assessment tool for teachers.

#Etiquetas predeterminadas:
#*Creemos que podemos mejorar el uso de etiquetas haciendo que el usuario seleccione desde un grupo predefinido. Los proyectos puedan agregar su listado local, y el niño también puede agregar sus propias etiquetas. Algunas posibles pantallas: http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Journal_NewUI#Mockups
#*Aún nos queda definir cuáles son las etiquetas más adecuadas para poder tener una base en común y un punto de comparación entre los distintos países: asignaturas (ciencias, literatura, geometría, etc.) o por dimensiones de trabajo (búsqueda, lectura, creación, etc.)
#Etiquetas en las actividades:
#*Podemos asignar etiquetas por defecto a las Actividades basadas en la categoría de la Actividad. Esto facilitaría la automatización para el análisis de las categorías de Actividades que más se usan.
#*A la vez facilitaría los filtros de búsqueda para la vista Hogar basado en estas categorías.
#Etiquetas de audio:
#*La comunidad no está convencida del beneficio que traería el agregar etiquetas de sonido a las entradas del Diario.
#*Se sugirió agregar esta opción de etiquetas de sonido a la Actividad de Portafolio.
#*Se propuso hacer un prototipo para estudiar el uso dentro de un proyecto en específico, para analizar el comportamiento de los niños con respecto a esta función.
#Actividad Logros:
#*Actividad dedicada a mostrar niveles de logro dentro de Actividades (para las actividades más lineales tipo Maze) y ofrecer insignias ganadas por los logros. Se sugirió usar el término “Alcances”.
#*Se decidió pensar con más profundidad las implicaciones de esta Actividad, sobre todo si pretende ser una herramienta de evaluación al maestro.
