Ubuntu 9.04 has a "USB Startup Disk Creator". A real "user" created on a USB stick Created by "USB Startup Disk Creator"  with persistence will not display the install to hard disk icon on the desktop but rather moves it to Administration.  I used a 2 GB USB Stick with 650mb persistence file.

*Create a fat34 primary partition with the remaining unformatted space on the USB, set boot flag and label VM_Apps
*Give root a password (has to be given given a password in "Users and groups" while logged in as "live user")
*exit Partition Manager
*Log in to "User"

*Start Firefox and download VMPlayer (free)  Linux.bundle
*create USB select: /dev/sdb1 "Ubuntu"
*Select "Other" and find Fedora.iso  (not live install) previously downloaded to Desktop

*Two USB icons will appear cut and paste previously obtained VMPlayer Appliance to VM_Apps
