= Sugar Pilot Berlin =

The purpose of this Sugar pilot project is to evaluate the Sugar Learning Platform for use in Berlin schools. The Learning Platform will be integrated into Berlin schools under the motto "A Global Project In The Neighborhood."

The [http://www.gsap.de/ Planetarium School] is the partner of the Berlin pilot project for the school year 2009-2010. The school is focused on sports and is located in the heart of Berlin. In addition to promoting children's interest in sports, the school focuses on learning with new media. For example, a course was taught in the [http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logo_% 29% 28Programmiersprache LOGO programming language]. The infrastructure of the school is designed for the use of computers in the classroom. For example, there is a room with 30 laptops, with 2 more computer labs plus a school server on which each student has an account.

Sugar was introduced at the start of the school year in a school project for grades 4, 5 and 6. A two-hour lesson involved designing [http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Activities/Memorize Memorize] games and drawing simple geometric shapes with the [http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Activities/TurtleArt TurtleArt Activity]. (Separately,) the elementary school at the planetarium offers electives that children can choose from. Sugar is offered as an elective course this year. The course is taught for one hour, once per week. There are 15 students in the Sugar course, and the majority are female.

The lessons are divided into blocks according to topic. [http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Activities/Memorize The Memorize Activity] was chosen as an introduction to working with Sugar. Another class block was dedicated to [http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Activities/TurtleArt TurtleArt], and another to [http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Activities/Physics Physics]. The students are currently working on a major project in [http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Activities/Etoys Etoys]. After an introduction to the capabilities of the program (such as its usage to create interactive games) they will be using Etoys to tell a story.

= Technical details =
