Introduction

This page provides information about setting up a Sugar Workstation. It explains how to set up a sugar workstation with collaboration using a set of used computers.

Hardware

Recommended minimum computer requirements:

- Pentium IV Processor 1.0 GHZ

- 512 MB RAM

- CD Drive

Required Hardware:

- Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC) for each computer (most computers already have this installed)

- Ethernet compatible hub with at least the same number of ports as computers in the network plus one

- Ethernet cable for each computer

Installation

1. Wiping Hard Drive

When working with used or donated computers it is highly recommended to first wipe the computer’s hard drive. This can be done using DBAN, a program that automatically deletes any pre-existing operation system. DBAN can be downloaded here: http://www.dban.org

DBAN is designed to boot from floppy or CD and completely wipe all hard drives attached to the machine. It can either fill them with zeroes or do multiple passes to various government security standards.

2. Installing Hardware

- Turn off all the computers

- Find a convenient and safe location for the hub. Connect Ethernet cable from internet source to the first port on the hub.

- Run an Ethernet cable from the Ethernet Network Interface Card on each computer to the Ethernet hub.

- Power on hub and computers
