It also may make sense to put a swap partition on the USB to help with some of the issues regarding OOM. (Yes, it will wear out, but not so quickly as one would think (Mitch Bradley had some interesting analyses of this which I will try to dig up.) But the bottom line is we need to keep the footprint small.
