Professional Qualifications:
Bachelor degree in Educational Science with a specialization in Education and New Technologies, Teacher of Information science and robotics since 1992, Educational Assistant to the Central Board of Directors of the National Administration of Public Education of Uruguay.
Platform:
The massive distribution of computers in education in recent years represents a break in the usual implementation of TIC in the classroom, modifying the role of the teacher and presenting new ways of learning for the students. As we have said sometime ago, “At the beginning the logical tendency was to adapt previous uses of the computer. The implementation of a platform like Sugar, rich in content designed especially for children, enabled a reversal of this tendency” (García y Bailón, 2015).
At the same time, “recalling at Rousseau, children are not miniature adults. Because of this, the concept of Sugar and the design of its own laptop by OLPC was developed keeping in mind the subjectivity and autonomy of the child. This option intentionally made it a point to keep at a distance from designing machines equal to those of adults, but of smaller size, or adapting the desktops which adults were accustomed to using for children, and not adapting and keeping those applications used most widely by adults, which would have only helped maintain the attachment to using ‘office’ programs in the school because those were what the teachers were most familiar with. The election of this kind of device and software in particular, choosing the 1:1 model and an operating system designed specifically for children, reverse the process shaking the inertia of the teaching staff, and encouraging them to rethink their practices.” (García y Báez, 2013).

We understand that Sugar is, therefore, the best environment to achieve the changes that educators are seeking in their institutional practices. Because of this, Sugar should not be limited to one model of computer. The trend toward using mobile devices or online applications make it necessary to strengthen the presence of multiplatform Sugar in the educational environment, to develop the potential for learning, and to generate a new educational paradigm. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen Sugar as a learning environment, not just as software.
